The Meaning of Life

A tweet has inspired my entry for today. Someone I’m following tweeted today “What is the meaning of life? To be happy and useful.”

What does it mean to be happy? I feel happy, not when there is nothing to worry about (because there will always be something to worry about) but when I feel capable of dealing with my worries. Happiness isn’t the absence of stress, it’s the ability to cope. Joy isn’t found in forgetting the past, it’s in the appreciation of the present.

What about being useful? I feel useful when I’m doing something for someone else. My idea of a lazy day is time spent on myself. Lazy days make me happy, but feeling useful is more satisfying.

When do you feel happy? What do you define as useful? Is this all that’s required for a meaningful life?
